pirate radio event

ALASKA PROJECTS gallery in Kings Cross Sydney.

A drive in/radio art event hosting left field electronic artists performing in and around a car to guests seated in cars in a gallery parking lot.

"BYO cars. CARPOOL."

The broadcast was essentially a play on several artistic, techno, commercial radio + radio art tropes utilising the transgressive geography of a Kings Cross parking lot. Kings Cross is an eventful yet sordidly banal part of Sydney's geography. It holds fast to a history of transgression, yet it announces itself with the plastic ferocity of breakfast radio.

An FM broadcast was sent to audience members parked in the lot, however, anyone could tune in at anytime from any part of the Cross. Listeners tuning in were encouraged  to take control of the variable aspects of the broadcast signal as it came to them ~ "Each listener hears their own final version of a work for radio combined with the ambient sound of their own space." ~ In this case a car, parked in a smoked out gallery parking lot, a hand held radio tuning between stations, a reverberant PA thrown from the boot of a beat up hatchback.
